ANNUNCIATION

Objectives:

  1. Children should know what happened at Annunciation.
  2. Children should be able to identify the figures in the icon.

 

Possible Lesson Plan:

  1. Open with prayer.

 

2. Read the story of the Annunciation in Beginner’s Bible, pages 266-270, the Children’s Bible Reader, pages 164-165, or Read with Me Bible, pages 252-255. Supplement, if desired, with the Golden Children’s Bible, pages 348-349. Review the story with the icon, identifying Mary and Gabriel. What is Mary holding? She is shown holding a spool of thread because she was spinning thread when the angel appeared to her.

  1. Have the children repeat the difficult word, “Annunciation”, until they have it straight.

 

  1. Review your lesson on angels: Who are some of the angels that appear in the Bible? What is their function?

6. Sing “All Night, All Day” with new verses:

Mary went to the well that day, Angels watching over me, my Lord,

Blessed are you, the angel did say, Angels watching over me.

 

Gabriel said, You’ll have a son, Angels watching over me, my Lord,

He’ll be the Savior, the holy One, Angels watching over me.

 

Now I know the Lord’s command, Angels watching over me, my Lord.

His will I’ll do, his child I am, Angels watching over me.

 

7. Make a Bottle Angel: Take a small dish-detergent or similar bottle, even a water bottle. Add doily, feather, or paper wings, a strip of paper folded for a book, a Styrofoam head with yarn hair and chenille halo.

No bottles? Make the Angel Gabriel from a toilet paper tube. Just print the pattern and color and cut out the pieces. Wrap the large rectangle around the toilet paper tube as the robe of the angel and glue in place with white glue or glue sticks. Add face with hair and halo, arms, little feet at the bottom, and flower and scroll. Glue wings to back. Decorate with glitter glue if desired.

           

 

  1. Close with prayer.
